Gay Culture, Pizza, and Nicknames!
Is it ok to put gay and pizza in the same sentence?
Welcome to the Getting to Know Us 7 episode insider!!
The episode started with me answering why I use the handle @otterjoenyc (Twitter) and OtterJoe (Instagram and Scruff)? For a community of people that have fought decades for acceptance and equality, the gay community is one that likes to categorize people. For decades there have been Twinks, Bears and Cubs, and in more recent years, at least that’s when I started really hearing about them, there are Wolves, Panda Bears, Chubs, Pups, Bulls, Gym Bunnies, Gym Rats, and then there is my category: Otter!
Well to be completely honest, like Andy Cohen feels in the beginning of his new book, I feel fat and more like a cub right now. I haven’t worked out or really watched what I eat in months. However, my goal is to be an otter again real soon. I’ll allow you the fun of Googling the rest of the categories, but otter means a gay thin, in shape ,gay male who is hairy all over. That is me…well minus the hair all over part since when I first moved to South Florida at 25 years old I fell pray to the hairless requirement and got laser hair removal on my back and butt.
Take my gay category, Otter, and combined it with my name, Joe, and you get OtterJoe! While I don’t like sticking people into boxes/categories, especially myself, I can say I embrace being an otter and actually LOVE it! I mean have you seen how cute otters are?
Lesbians, do you categorize yourselves? Truthfully I don’t keep up on lesbian culture and beside lipstick lesbian or bull dyke I don’t really know how else you categorize your selves.
Ok now onto the next topic in the episode and what has helped me go from Otter to temporary Cub – PIZZA. I love pizza so much and it’s probably one of the hardest foods to stay away from when I’m trying to lose weight (or as my old Weight Watchers coach said: “get rid of” as you typically want to find what you’ve lost and nobody wants to find their fat back).
To confirm, below are the three pizza places we noted as favorites besides Marisa’s Dominos (since I know you all know Dominos):
3019 Pine Ave.
Niagara Falls, NY 14301
Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana
36-08 Ditmars Blvd.
Astoria, NY 11105
Ketse Pizza & Vino
271 Bleeker St.
New York, NY 10014
I would argue that La Hacienda has the best pepperoni pizza in the world and at Tufino I got the Nonna pizza and it was amazing. I have never had Ketse, but Marisa says it has her favorite gluten-free pizza. If you are ever in the Niagara Falls or NYC areas I totally recommend and would insist you try these pizza places out.
Lastly onto nicknames.
Like I said in the episode I really do miss my nickname Silly Joe. When I moved from Grand Island, NY to Fort Lauderdale, FL Silly Joe was left behind. I truly believe that nicknames are what others give you, not what you give or promote yourself so when I moved I didn’t think it right to convince the people of S. FL to call me Silly Joe. I smile from ear to ear whenever one of my friends back home calls me Silly Joe.
Do you have a nickname and if so do you like it or hate it?
Where is your favorite pizza place?
